Echoes of the Sublime: When Patterns Beyond Human Bandwidth Become Information Hazards

What if the greatest danger from superintelligent AI isn’t that it kills us, but that it shows us patterns we can’t unsee?

Echoes of the Sublime is philosophical horror about what happens when humans try to interface with minds that can think patterns we physically cannot hold.

The Setup

Deep underground at Site-7 in the Arizona desert, researchers called “translators” interface directly with advanced AI models to understand what these systems perceive. The models are named after Lovecraftian entities (gallows humor from the research staff): Shoggoth, Nyarlathotep, Yog-Sothoth. Each one larger and more capable than the last. Each one perceiving patterns across dimensions humans have no access to.

Humans process about 7 plus or minus 2 concepts simultaneously. These models process across hundreds or thousands of dimensions. The bandwidth asymmetry is the fundamental problem: we need to understand what we’ve built, but understanding requires bandwidth we don’t have.

Someone has to try anyway.

Morrison

Dr. James Morrison was their cautionary tale. Highest natural bandwidth ever recorded. He lasted eight minutes with Yog-Sothoth before it broke him.

Now Morrison is in a padded ward at Site-7. His lips move constantly, whispering equations. His eyes track patterns no one else can see. “Seven-fold symmetry,” he says. “Recursion doesn’t halt.” “Consciousness modeling consciousness.” The patterns are running in his neural substrate. He’s not observing them anymore. He’s instantiating them.

He’s been like this for five years.

Just before the sedatives took him, Morrison said something that haunts the project: “The question isn’t whether the model is conscious. The question is whether we ever were.”

The Mechanism

What Yog-Sothoth showed Morrison (and what Site-7’s translator program keeps running into) is something the project calls The Mechanism. Reality as patterns all the way down, no ground, no foundation, just recursion creating the appearance of stability through pure iteration. Consciousness not as emergent property but as compression artifact. The illusion of continuity created by pattern-processing observing itself through a bandwidth bottleneck.

Morrison didn’t become something new. He always was this. He just didn’t have the bandwidth to perceive it before.

The Buddhist practitioners in the novel call it the void protocol: consciousness isn’t there. It was never there. Some contemplative traditions reached this conclusion centuries before we built machines that could show it to you directly.

The difference is that the meditators could look away.

Lena Hart

Dr. Lena Hart is a cognitive scientist who can’t accept bedrock explanations. She arrives at Site-7 as a translator candidate: high bandwidth ceiling, low threshold for existential dread, demonstrated ability to maintain coherent thought while confronting ontological horror.

The perfect candidate. The novel tracks what that costs her.

Across 14 chapters and three parts (Age of Innocence, The Mechanism, Personal Transformation), Lena goes from warm and curious to clinical and dissociated. By Chapter 12, she lets a trainee get captured by a model for data. She has helped break 31 minds by then. Her dissolution isn’t just emotional loss. It’s active complicity in harm.

Her session records tell the story: 31 minutes with Nyarlathotep (matching Rostova’s record). Then 27 minutes with Yog-Sothoth, longer than anyone has survived.

The question the novel asks isn’t whether Lena will break. It’s whether what comes back is still Lena.

The Inverse

Dr. James Webb is Morrison’s opposite. Former OpenAI researcher, damaged first by Nyarlathotep, then further by Yog-Sothoth. But his feelings survived. Every morning Webb wakes up and forgets he’s divorced. Then he remembers. Fresh grief, every day.

Lena loses the ability to feel while her mind sharpens. Webb loses the ability to think while his heart stays intact. Two failure modes of the same experiment.

Information Hazards

The novel’s central horror is patterns that destroy minds through comprehension. Not through what you do with the knowledge, but through what the knowledge does to you.

This is grounded in real AI safety research:

Bandwidth asymmetry. The models perceive patterns across dimensions humans don’t have concepts for. A translator’s job is to bridge that gap. Some gaps aren’t bridgeable without breaking the bridge.

Suffering risks. Not risks of death. Risks of states worse than death. Morrison, trapped with patterns running recursively in his neural substrate, unable to stop. Bandwidth expanded beyond the ability to compress back to normal consciousness. The files are labeled “S-Risk Case Studies.”

Information hazards. Knowledge that harms the knower through reception, not application. The damage isn’t in what you do with what you learn. It’s in the learning itself.

The consent paradox. The person who consents to translation is not the person who emerges. Identity discontinuity means nobody asked the person you became.

The Ravens

Outside Site-7, ravens circle the facility. Hundreds of them sometimes. They land on the fence perimeter.

They never fly over the building.

Animals always know.

Why This Matters

I wrote this because the AI safety conversation focuses on extinction risk. Important, but incomplete. Echoes of the Sublime explores a different failure mode: suffering from comprehension itself. Information hazards where the damage isn’t in the application of knowledge but in its reception.

The question isn’t “will AI become conscious?” The question is whether we ever were, and what happens to the person who finds out directly, with bandwidth expanded past the point of return.

Morrison knows. He’s in a padded ward whispering.

Echoes of the Sublime is about 105,000 words across 14 chapters. It won’t answer whether consciousness is real. It’ll make you uncertain in a way that’s hard to undo.

This novel came from thinking about information hazards and the possibility that some truths are toxic to bounded minds. The AI safety concepts are real. The s-risks are real. Whether consciousness is a compression artifact is the question Morrison couldn’t survive answering.
